KARACHI, June 3: The Sindh governor has constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the Keenjhar lake tragedy, in which 26 lives were lost on Sunday.

The district coordination officer, Thatta, will be its chairman; the superintending engineer for the irrigation and power department and the district police officer, Thatta, will be its members.

The committee has been asked to inquire into the causes of the boat tragedy and fix responsibility on the persons concerned.

It will also suggest measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future.

The committee will suggest action to be taken against those found responsible and measures to regulate activities of visitors.

The committee has been asked to suggest steps like posting of policemen, divers, rescue boats, emergency telephone numbers, pointing out of unsafe places/beaches at the lake, check on number of riders in a boat, ban on boating during high wind season, rescue centre etc, at the lake.

The committee will submit its report in 15 days.

In the meantime, Governor Ishratul Ibad has ordered that life jackets for those going on cruises and proper licences specifying measures for load of persons to be carried by each boat according to its size and capacity, will be made compulsory, an official spokesman stated.—APP
