KARACHI, Oct 8: The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) is planning to change its name, it emerged on Tuesday.

The power utility on Tuesday notified the KESC Shareholders Association of this pending change through a letter stating that it planned to change its name to K-Electric.

Confirming a possible change in the company’s name, a KESC spokesman, on being contacted, said the company after being privatised had a new identity and hence deserved a new name.

“The KESC hasn’t changed the name as yet but it does plan to do so soon,” he said.

“The KESC is a private company now with new turnaround and fresh innovations so the step seems right.”

The new name seems similar to K-Energy, the off-shore company that KESC is leasing its Bin Qasim units 3 and 4 to for conversion to coal power units. But to change the name of the utility, the KESC must get permission from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra).

When contacted, Syed Sagheer Hussain, the Nepra registrar, said the regulatory authority had not been notified about it. “The plan to change the KESC’s name is not in our knowledge as yet. A licensee has to inform Nepra through Licensee Proposed Modification,” he said.

“But,” he continued, “if the KESC has notified its shareholders, then it is fine as the process of name changing of company begins with taking the shareholders into confidence, followed by hearing their arguments regarding the plan.”—Staff Reporter
