KANDAHAR, June 2: Two rockets were fired at the house of Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s brother Ahmad Wali Karzai, but did not explode, his security chief said on Monday.

The rockets were fired around 9pm on Sunday at Ahmad Wali Karzai’s house in Kandahar while he was home, but missed and hit the compound of a house 50 metres away, Haji Khan said.

There were no casualties as the Russian-made rockets failed to explode and just damaged dozens of bricks along the bottom of the compound wall.

“It’s obvious President Karzai’s brother’s house was the target of this attack but luckily they did not hit it,” the security official said.

Ahmad Wali Karzai told his security guards to be on high alert for further attacks.

“They are not my enemies, I don’t have any enemies, they are the enemies of Afghanistan,” he said of the unknown attackers.

Ahmad Wali Karzai is influential in Kandahar and acts as a go-between between his brother and the provincial government. He is also a local tribal leader.

Police were investigating the attack. It was not known who carried it out but similar incidents have been blamed on Taliban and the Al Qaeda network. Rockets are their weapon of choice but are inaccurate and rarely cause casualties.—AFP
