RAWALPINDI: An Election Tribunal (ET) on Tuesday directed former parliamentarian Malik Shakeel Awan to produce evidence for the alleged involvement of Member National Assembly (MNA) Sheikh Rashid Ahmed in poll-rigging.

ET Judge Wamiq Javed was hearing an appeal filed by the former MNA belonging to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), seeking disqualification of Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid, who won the NA-55 Rawalpindi seat in the May 11 general elections.

Rashid had also won the seat in 2002 but lost it in 2008.

In the 2013 general elections, Sheikh Rashid’s party had entered an electoral alliance with Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) to support one another in the polls for Rawalpindi’s NA-55 and NA-56 seats.

The applicant, in his petition, alleged that Rashid had taken control of various polling stations and used unfair means to secure votes. He also alleged that the elected MNA also filed a wrong statement of his assets with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The tribunal ordered the applicant to produce evidence before the court to establish the allegations and adjourned the hearing till September 30.
