Plea for release disposed of

Published May 28, 2003

LAHORE, May 27: The chief justice of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday disposed of a petition for the release of 22 MPAs who had been arrested during a Punjab Assembly session.

Following the Punjab advocate general’s statement that the police had already released the MPAs, the CJ ruled that the petition for habeas corpus had become infructuous.

The petitioner, Lahore High Court Bar Association’s human rights committee vice-chairman Chaudhry Ghulam Sarwar, had sought release of the detenues as well as a judicial inquiry against the provincial home secretary, the IGP and the Qila Gujjar Singh SHO.— Reporter
