Amitabh Bachchan has emerged as the greatest Bollywood star in a UK poll celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema.

The multi-award winning actor of countless classics bagged major share of votes from critics, fans and the film fraternity to be named on top in the survey '100 Greatest Bollywood Stars' published by a British Asian weekly newspaper.

In a career spanning an incredible 40 years, 70-year-old Bachchan blockbusters like "Sholay" and "Deewar". He is also credited with bridging the gap between Bollywood and TV by hosting popular game show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'.

Referred to as Big B by his fans, Bachchan was also the first Bollywood star to be honoured with a statue at Madame Tussauds and recently represented India as the Olympic torch-bearer at the London 2012 Games.

The survey was compiled via a combination of audience votes through social media, box-office figures, cinematic impact and critical acclaim.

Bachchan's own choice and yesteryears acting legend Dilip Kumar came in second with Shah Rukh Khan coming in a close third.

Madhuri Dixit topped the survey among Bollywood's female actresses and was placed fourth in the overall list.

"I am proud to be a part of that and I am also proud to be a part of the whole movement where cinema is getting better and we are trying to do something different," Madhuri said.

"It's wonderful to be highly placed, but it also comes with a great sense of responsibility on my shoulders where I have to do better every time when I am doing something. So I love it and I love what I do," she added.

The others who made it to the top 10 included names like Raj Kapoor (5), Nargis (6), Dev Anand (7), Waheeda Rehman (8), Rajesh Khanna (9) and Sridevi (10).

Other notable stars to make the cut include Salman Khan (11), Aamir Khan (14), Dharmendra (15), Hema Malini (18), Madhubala (24), Kajol (30), Hrithik Roshan (32), Rani Mukerji (38), Kareena Kapoor (43), Mumtaz (50), Saif Ali Khan (59), Priyanka Chopra (86) and Katrina Kaif (93). — TOI

The news that Amitabh Bachchan crowned greatest Bollywood star, is not justified. Dilip Kumar is the epitome of Indian film industry, nobody can match his acting caliber. If we match Amitab's film with Dilip's, then he will appear very minuscule actor before every green Dilip Kumar. Amitab only got the coveted crown due to maintaining his relations with the concerned authorities inside India and out of India. UK Poll must judge actor ability in the field of acting and not in the field of socializing with the people through twitter, face book or social networking. Amitab has availed that facility to become famous in an extreme way. As far as acting caliber is concerned, crown should have been crowned on Dilip Kumar as other actors can not match his natural persona.

He is a good actor but totally overrated to the edge of a mass psychosis. Dilip Kumar, Balraj Sani or Naseeruddin Shah are far bigger artists, both as actors and as humanbeings!

Khan Jul 28, 2013 05:43am

Congratulations...dhool maga dhool

Bachchan Saab deserves the honor. He is undoubtedly the Biggest Super Star Indian Cinema has ever produced. No other star can cum anywhere near him. EAST OR WEST, BACHCHAN SAAB IS THE BEST. GIVE IT UP FOR BACHCHAN . HE IS THE SHAHENSHAH OF INDIAN CINEMA.

Where is handsome & dashing vinod khanna?

It seems most of the voters were in diapers when great actors and actresses of yesteryears gave outstanding performances. Amazing that Meena Kumari wasn't on the list. she was outstanding and perhaps the best. Madhuri Dixit is all about dancing. Dilip Kumar was more versatile actor than Bachhan. If voting is allowed for the greatest horse contest, the winner will be camel.

@Aiza: You are right about Balraj Sahni and Naseeruddin Shah. However, Dilip Kumar has been more overrated. But I know you will not be convinced.

Sitaram Jul 29, 2013 12:57am

@Aiza: Please try to look outside the prism of your religion. I know Pakis are fans of only Muslim Bollywood actors.

abc Jul 29, 2013 02:04am

@ANEES LOKHANDE: I totally agree with you, Mr Anees. Dilip Kumar should have been crowned this coveted crown. And close second and third on the list should have been Amir Khan and Shahrukh Khan, based on entirely in the field of acting and not in the field of socializing. Amitabh Bachhan stands nowhere near any of these actors, if it is purely based on one's acting calibre.

Arshad Khan Jul 29, 2013 02:25am

For sheer acting skill then Dilip is matchless. Dilip transformed a scene into a real life experience where one felt as if standing next to him in that scene. Amitabh is very good but just misses the greatness due to the quantity of films he makes wherebye the greatness slips away. Raj Kapoor in Andaz ,Ashok Kumar in Mahal, Balraj Sahni in Garam Hawa were superb.

@yaqoot: u cant care and no one cares for u or ur nation too .. despite having good talent in pakistan none pakistani features ...none cares for you guy s !

Mohabbat Jul 29, 2013 08:06am

@Rajesh Rajagopal: correct voting..but wonder how did the non actor Shah Rukh Khan get there to be 3rd????

Mohabbat Jul 29, 2013 08:07am

@Aiza: and you lived to tell the tale as a true judge of human beings right??

Sidra Hussain Jul 29, 2013 10:23am

Amitabh Bachchan is surely the biggest actor ever produced by the Indian cinema. He is a legend and a true icon of Indian cinema. Actors like Dilip Kumar and Shahrukh Khan who do similar type of roles and acting in almost every movie cannot even come closer to versatile Bachchan Sahaab. Big B is undoubtedly one man industry. He has been voted as the star of the Millennium in BBC's 2000 poll. He had been named as the greatest actor of the century in the Asian poll. He has the biggest fan following in India. He is all time best. Amitabh Bachchan you are the best always and forever :)

Irad Jul 29, 2013 12:16pm

Amitabh has Two major edges over other male actors, including Dilip Kumar. 1. He can sing, act in comedy roles, had a great screen presence & brought a new trend to Indian movies 2. No other actor comes closer to Amitabhs baritone voice, which still remains unmatched in Indian cinema. I am surprised that Sanheev Kumar, a class actor in his hey days, is missing from the list.
