KESC cuts Steel Mills' power over non-payment of dues; Nawaz takes notice

ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday took notice of the energy crisis that arose because the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) disconnected electricity supply to the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM), DawnNews reported.

Earlier, KESC had cut off power supply to the PSM on account of non-payment of 93 crore rupees.

Since the suspension of electricity, PSM has virtually remained closed.

PM Nawaz, subsequently, took notice of the situation.

Meanwhile, Minster of Industry and Production, Murtaza Jatoi, reached Karachi and summoned an important meeting pertaining to the matter, following the request of PSM and KESC.

Jatoi expressed hope that electricity would be soon restored for PSM.

What a shame! Once a gold mine is now in default. Thanks to our PM Sharif who for his own steel mills killed the nation's largest steel mill. This is what happens when there is conflict of interest between the nation's chief executive and nation's assets! Good job Mr. Sharif!

What is the point in running the steel mills if can not afford to pay for electricity? Now who will pay for the salaries of workers? What can the prime minister do?

But for how long? Govt will again bail out PS on expense of KESC. KESC should cut all non-payers electric.

@Riaz: This is a remnant of your favourite dictator Musharraf and Zardari's policies. Till now NS has shown strong resolve to tackle the power crisis. I hope his initiatives bear fruit and at the same time pakistan moves these profitable institutions out of crisis, possibly through privatisation!

Very simply, PSM should clear its bills with KESC before anything else. Mr Jatoi's hopes are unfounded if he chairs a meeting to start PSM operations without making payment to KESC.

a step in the right direction, KESC under private management is moving correctly to push the bloated state owned and mismanaged PSM to get its house in order. PSM should have been privatized years ago.

So the PM has taken notice!!! What a joke. I suppose now be will wait for his brother to feed him the right words so he can make a statement. From the China trip it is obvious our PM, without his talented brother cannot even articulate a proper sentence!!! It is now getting so obvious that this bunch has come into power without any plans for anything. Now they are 'winging' it as they move forward! God help us!
