KARACHI, May 25: A policeman was gunned down in an armed attack in the Manghopir area on Saturday, officials said.
They said that gunmen riding a motorbike targeted Police Constable Mohammad Iqbal in the Sultanabad area of Manghopir and rode away. He sustained two bullet wounds and died on the spot.
The body was moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Doctors said he was hit in the head and chest.
The police said that he was posted at the Khawaja Ajmer Nagri police station and a resident of Orangi Town.
“The reason behind his visit to the area (Manghopir) is not yet clear,” said Manghopir SHO Inspector Aslam Joya.
“According to some witnesses, he was attacked by pillion riders.”
“He was in plain clothes when attacked by the motorcyclists. Why was he there and to whom he was meeting is not yet clear. Investigators will definitely talk to his family and collect his call data record to connect the dots,” he added.
Man killed, friend wounded
A young man was killed and his friend wounded in a Baldia Town locality on Saturday.
Initially, the SITE-B and the Mauripur police stations had a dispute over jurisdiction. However, on the intervention of high-ups, it was decided that the area where the crime took place fell within the remit of the Mauripur police station.
Mauripur SHO Inspector Mohammad Iftikhar said that armed men attacked two men near a traffic police post in Baldia Town No 2 and fled.
He said that 35-year-old Fateh Khan died while his friend, 25-year-old Malik Asif, was wounded. “We only know the names of the victims. The police are in early phase of collecting facts and not aware of the details of the exact incident.”
Youth shot dead
A young man was shot dead minutes after he left home in the Surjani Town area for his workplace.
Police said that armed men on a motorbike intercepted 25-year-old Sikandar Khan as he left his residence in Sector 7-D, fired a single shot from a very close range and rode away.
“Witnesses that the attackers had a brief argument with the victim before one of them fired a shot,” said an official at the Surjani Town police station. “It was not a mugging attempt, as we have reason to believe that the attackers and the victim knew each other very well.”
The body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
