HYDERABAD: Justice Mushir Alam, Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, has said the time had come to speak the truth and admit that the “judiciary does have some weaknesses”.

However, the judiciary was like parents and lawyers were its children, the chief justice said at a dinner hosted in his honour on Monday.

In reply to a question, he said “regulators have become partners in corruption” and that there was a nexus between “corrupt judicial officials and some lawyers”.

He was asked to elaborate on a statement of his that a strike call was given by the Sindh Bar Council (SBC) shortly after the issuance of a notice to judicial officers.

He replied in the affirmative when a journalist asked whether there was a link between such judicial officials and lawyers.

About corruption, Justice Mushir Alam said the introduction of information technology in the judiciary had checked corruption to some extent. Litigants can now get their date of hearing confirmed through the internet, recalling that earlier they used to pay Rs50 or Rs100 for the same.

He urged media to shed its focus on spicy stories and see for itself how many productive changes had been brought about in the Sindh High Court. Journalists can now approach a member of the inspection team for verification of any report, the chief justice added.
