Explosive material seized

PESHAWAR, June 13: Police seized explosive material in the suburbs of Peshawar on Thursday and arrested an accused.

According to police, a suspected car was taken into custody at Arbab Tapo checkpost near Darra Adamkhel and during search 125kg explosives, 1,000 detonators and 1,000 safety fuses were recovered from the vehicle. He said an accused, who identified himself as Jahanzeb, was arrested. He said the explosive material was being transported from tribal areas to Peshawar.

Meanwhile, unidentified armed men broke into a post office and decamped with Rs100,000 in the afternoon on Thursday. An official said that the post office was located at Ashrafia Road in the limits of Faqirabad police station. Dacoits looted the amount after holding a clerk, Noor Taj, hostage at gunpoint and escaped. — Bureau Report

Killers’ arrest sought

KOHAT, June 13: The peace committee, which was headed by slain MPA Fareed Khan of Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI), has given a one week deadline to the administration to arrest the alleged killers nominated in the FIR.

Former MPA Atiqur Rehman, who lost to the slain PTI MPA in the May 11 elections, and his brother Shafiqur Rehman have been nominated in the FIR by the family of the victim. But no one has been arrested so far.

Police said that the accused had gone underground as they were afraid of being attacked if they went to the courts to get bail before arrest. Police wanted to arrest them alive but the angry supporters of the slain MPA were adamant to eliminate them before reaching the courts, an official said.

Police claimed to have arrested the main killer of the MPA, Mullah Nabi Hanafi, who was taken into custody during a search operation. — Correspondent

SSC exam results

ABBOTTABAD, June 13: Abbottabad Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education has announced the result of Secondary School Certificate (matric) exam here on Thursday. A total of 50,875 students appeared out of which 39,927 were declared pass with a pass percentage of 78.48 per cent.

Hamza Yunus of Pakistan International Public School & College Abbottabad got first position with 1001 marks, Najamus Saher of Jinnah Jamia High School and College Haripur stood second with 991 marks and thirds position was bagged by Zoya Fayaz of Modernage Public School & College Abbottabad with 989 marks.

In science group (female) Najamus Saher of JJHS&C Haripur with 991 marks got first position, Zoya Fayaz of MPS&C with 989 marks got 2nd and Gul Meena of Tameer-i-Nau Secondary School Mansehra with 981 marks got third position.

In science group (male), Hamza Yunus of PIPS with 1001 marks got first position, Naeemullah of Pine Hills Public School & College Abbottabad with 979 marks got 2nd position, Haseeb Shafaqat of Al-Quran Beacon School Mansehra with 975 marks remained third. — Correspondent

Ex-MNA warns of protest

CHITRAL, June 13: Former MNA from Chitral Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali has condemned the federal government for neglecting Lowari Tunnel project in the federal budget, which was a mega project of prime importance for the people of Chitral.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he warned the government that a protest movement would be launched if at least Rs5 billion fund was not allocated for the project in the budget.

He said that the protest movement would be of immense magnitude in which people from all political parties would take part in the same spirit irrespective of their political affiliations.

He said that the people of Chitral had pinned high hopes on PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif for the completion of Lowari tunnel project but he regretted that the budget speech had sent a shock wave across the valley. — Correspondent

Police, public liaison urged

UPPER DIR, June 13: Police force has been asked to bring positive changes in their dealings with people by treating commoners with respect at police stations to create people’s confidence in the force and forge a good relationship with them.

This was stated by police officers at a consultative workshop organised by Devolution Trust for Community Empowerment and ABKT.

DSP Noor Jamal said police should follow the idea of community policing in which people’s support was achieved to ensure better liaison. He said community policing was a better strategy to cut crime rate as in this kind of policing people and police exchanged information. He added that it could also reduce disputes between people.

DTCE coordinator Irfan Khalid said the workshop was part of the ‘safety and justice’ programme of his organisation which was aimed at bridging gap between police and people. — Correspondent

Office-bearers

CHITRAL, June 13: Abdul Wali Khan has been elected as president of Peshawar High Court Circuit Court Chitral Bar Association at its general body meeting. The other office-bearers include Mohammad Shahabuddin, vice-president, Shamsul Islam, secretary general, Mohammad Zahir Shah, secretary finance, and Qazi Ishaq, press secretary.

In a press release issued by the association here on Thursday, it has been stated that in the meeting the members also approved the draft constitution of the association. — Correspondent
