KUWAIT CITY, May 10: US troops shot dead one looter and wounded two others as coalition forces continued to come under sporadic fire while moving to restore security in Iraq in recent days, US Central Command said on Saturday.

Soldiers from the Third Infantry Division opened fire on the looters in Baghdad on Friday afternoon after they “demonstrated hostile intent” while attempting to steal ammunition from an arms cache, Centcom said.

There were no US casualties, according to the statement released from a US rear base at Camp Doha in Kuwait.

A rocket-propelled grenade was also fired at a Third Armoured Cavalry Regiment squad headquarters near Al-Fallujah, west of Baghdad, on Friday evening.

The grenade missed the headquarters and landed in a nearby residential area. There were no known civilian or US casualties, Centcom said.

An unknown sniper fired on US soldiers conducting a sweep of several bunkers near the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance headquarters in Baghdad late Friday.

The soldiers did not return fire because they were unable to positively identify the position of the shooter, Centcom said. No injuries were reported.
