DACCA: While nearly one lakh people have lost their lives, many more who have survived the onslaught of nature still face the risk of losing their lives for want of food, shelter and water.

This was stated by Messrs Nurul Amin and Ataur Rahman Khan, President and Secretary respectively, of the East Pakistan Relief Committee, in a joint statement issued today (June 6).

Compared to the magnitude of the disaster the relief so far provided is too inadequate, they observed.

The statement said: “The extent and magnitude of the devastation caused by the recent cyclone in Chittagong, Feni, coastal areas and offshore islands could not yet be assessed but there is no dispute that the havoc wrought by the cyclone is colossal and the distress is appalling.

“The task of providing succour is gigantic and unless all sections of the people rise to the occasion and all conceivable resources are mobilised we are afraid the distress of the cyclone victims will not even be partly alleviated”. — Agencies
