KARACHI: Fear gripped most parts of the city on Saturday night after scattered incidents of violence, including arson and armed attacks.

At least one seminary student was killed and three others were injured in the attacks. And at least one bus was set on fire.

A sit-in by members and supporters of the Shia Ulema Council at a Malir intersection in protest against a deadly bombing in Quetta led to suspension of traffic on the National Highway.

According to sources, two armed men on a motorbike attacked two teenage students of Jamiat-ul-Uloom Al-Islami Binnori Town near Saddar Parking Plaza that left one of them dead and another injured.

“The 18-year-old deceased was identified as Mohammad Talha,” said an official at the Brigade police station. “His 19-year-old companion Usman Khan sustained two bullet wounds and was admitted to hospital where he is said to be in critical condition. Both are seminary students and were going to see some friends when they came under attack.”

Within half an hour, two more students came under armed attack near Guru Mandir, leaving them critically injured. Area police said the injured students — Abdul Majid and Roohullah — were also from Jamiat-ul-Uloom Al-Islami Binnori Town.

“They were attacked by armed men on a motorbike. We believe they were the target but the firing also injured two passersby who were identified as Shakil and Mazhar,” said a police official.

In the South District, a hand grenade attack caused panic in the densely-populated area. The area police said two men on a motorbike lobbed off hand-crackers near Garden bus stop which went off with bang but did not cause any loss.
