LAHORE, Feb 3: Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif confirms that parleys with various political parties are going on for putting up a joint force against the ruling coalition in the coming elections.

“Negotiations are under way with the Jamaat-i-Islami, the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), the JUP-Noorani, the Muslim League-Functional and other political parties,” Shahbaz told the media at a function here on Sunday.

He said talks were also under way with some Sindhi nationalist parties for striking an electoral grouping. He had been asked if the PML-N was holding talks with other parties for forming an electoral alliance as the PPP and PML-Q are working to agree on a seat-adjustment formula as well as taking along other parties in the elections.

He stressed that the whole nation should be united on national interest and there should be a unanimous agenda towards national issues.

He also supported opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar’s demand for removal of “political governors”, making it clear that the demand carried backing of the party.

“All possible steps should be taken for ensuring free, fair and impartial elections,” Shahbaz said when asked if the PML-N supported the call for replacement of governors fearing their interference in the election process.

“Chaudhry Nisar has given a clear-cut statement on the issue of removing the provincial governors.” He said holding of timely elections was vital for national solidarity and stability.

He parried a question regarding the PML-N nominee for the post of caretaker prime minister, saying if it was made known right now there would be left nothing to be revealed when it would be the appropriate time.
