LAHORE, Dec 4: A writ petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court, challenging re-appointment of the Punjab University vice chancellor, registrar and 63 other officials in contravention of the Supreme Court judgments.

A citizen, Muhammad Yousaf, filed the petition and contended that all 65 officials at the Punjab University including the vice chancellor were re-appointed after their retirement.

He said the re-appointment of these officials was not only a violation of the Supreme Court’s directions but also amounted to usurpation of the right of eligible candidates.

The petitioner prayed to the court to set aside the appointment of all respondents.

RIGHT TO VOTE: A local lawyer has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court seeking “right to vote” for Pakistani expatriates.

Advocate Shahid Pervez Jami stated in the petition that millions of Pakistanis living in foreign countries had been contributing to the development of the country.

He said the Representation of Peoples Act 1976 allowed the expatriates to cast votes in elections but the election commission had temporarily suspended this right owing to some technical problems.

The petitioner said restricting the overseas Pakistanis from exercising their right to vote was violation of their fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.

The petitioner prayed to the high court to direct the Election Commission of Pakistan to allow the expatriates to caste votes in the upcoming general elections.
