ISLAMABAD: Former army chief Mirza Aslam Beg submitted a review petition on Wednesday against the Supreme Court's verdict on the Asghar Khan case, DawnNews reported.

The review petition was filed by Barrister Syed Ali Zafar on behalf of the former army chief, which stated that Beg was  declared guilty without being given a chance to prove his innocence.

The petition further said that the former army chief was not involved in the process of  distribution of cash among politicians and requested for the Supreme Court's verdict on the issue to be declared as void.

Earlier on Saturday, the federal government had filed a review petition challenging the Supreme Court’s verdict in the Asghar Khan case.

According to a copy of the petition obtained by DawnNews, the government maintained in the petition that the apex court did not have the authority to issue such an order regarding the president, arguing that court’s observation regarding the presidency needs to be reviewed.

The SC’s detailed verdict in the Asghar Khan case issued on Nov 8 had dwelt at length on the role of the president and the involvement of his office in politics.

The apex court had issued a landmark short verdict on October 19 ordering legal proceedings against former head of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) General (Retd) Asad Durrani and former army chief General (Retd) Aslam Baig.

They had allegedly bankrolled politicians to stop the current ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) from winning the 1990 election.
