‘No respite’

Published July 23, 2012

IT has been over two years since Attabad Lake, also known as Hunza Lake, was formed due to the damming up of the Hunza River by a massive landslide in Gilgit-Baltistan on Jan 4, 2010.

It does not mean five years, it means until the next elections are announced by the government. Hence, there is pressure on the government to announce early elections.

As to whether this ploy will really work remains to be seen. While acts of the judiciary could be inflexible, the government should have shown some common sense to prevail.

Considering extremely poor governance of the country exhibited by the current government and web of corruption, both financial and moral, that could not be easily untangled in any court of law, the role played by the judiciary should be seen as supporting the democratic process. Any other choice but the caretaker government holding new elections would be dubbed by everyone as ‘undemocratic’.

The option given by the judiciary is for the current set-up to bite the bullet rather than being fatally shot by it.
