SWABI, June 17: Workers of a multinational tobacco company have vowed to continue struggle for securing their rights entitled to them under local and international labour laws.

Local labour leaders and workers of the company and those from Mardan, Buner and Charsadda districts attended the meeting held here on Sunday.  Leaders of Pakistan Workers Federation (PWF) participated in the meeting to guide the company workers on how they could protect their rights and dignity.

The workers alleged that the company officials had created several obstacles for them when they were registering their workers body – Mehnat Kash Union (MKU) – but they showed determination and got the MKU registered. They alleged that the company officials had been delaying grant of rights allowed to them under the labour law.

Speaking at the meeting, MKU president Ibrarullah said that they had no intentions to violate the company regulations and expected the company to abide by labour laws and stop exploitation of workers.

About the workers’ demands, Mr Ibrarullah said that they wanted the company to raise their salary commensurate to increase in prices of daily-use commodities, provide medical facilities, grant of gratuity on net pay and compensation to workers if they were injured or killed during duty.  —Correspondent
