PARACHINAR: Security forces have killed more than 200 militants over the past month in the Kurram tribal region where the military is waging an anti-Taliban offensive, a Pakistani official said.

Javedullah said four of the militants were killed Monday in the tribal region.

The United Nations said tens of thousands of civilians have fled the area to avoid the conflict.

Javedullah said one soldier had been killed and 10 had been wounded over the past month in Kurram. He said the fighting had slowed since the start of the month of Ramazan.

Access to Kurram is restricted and the reports are difficult to independently verify.

Pakistan's army has been fighting militants in the tribal belt for years, with limited success.
