RAWALPINDI, May 26: The intelligence wing of Punjab police has recommended an urgent review of security measures at some police offices and installations saying these buildings were vulnerable to terrorist attacks.

A source said the report sent to the inspector general of police (IGP) raised serious concerns about 'loopholes' in the existing security of the buildings. These included the police training centre Punjab Constabulary Rawat, regional police office, police lines, police college Sihala and offices of the DPO Attock and Jhelum.

After the US forces killed Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad and the terrorist attack on Pakistan Navy air base in Karachi, the intelligence agency conducted a survey through its field staff and identified the loopholes in the existing security of the police buildings and other installations.

RPO and city police officer (CPO) offices: Six close-circuit television cameras installed at the office of the RPO Rawalpindi were found non-functional while the parking system on the premises was poor.

Neither any barbed or razor wire was affixed on the compound walls nor there was any iron grill on it. One wall at the southern side was of low height and could easily be scaled by anybody.

There was no walk-through gate at the entrance of the CPO office which the report said was more vulnerable to terrorist attack from the western side due to low height of the compound wall.

Police line headquarters: The report also found serious 'loopholes' in the security of the police line headquarters which is housing hundreds of police personnel and important installations.

It said there was no proper security checking system at the building which can be targeted from the rooftops of the surrounding residential buildings, especially the triple-storey building of the excise and taxation office which was declared as a high security risk.

The report said the compound wall of the police lines at Jhanda Chichi was of low height and could easily be scaled by miscreants and there was no police deployment there.

Training centre, Rawat: The police training centre, Punjab Constabulary in Rawat, is built on 444 kanals and 1,549 police personnel are residing there. As many as 500 constables are getting training in the centre.

The entire area is covered only with barbed wire while police patrolling on a mobile van is being carried out along its boundary. However, there is no proper compound wall or any searchlights along the boundary. In case of power failure, there is no power generator, the report said.

The intelligence staff noticed serious flaws in the security of the training centre and recommended comprehensive security plans for its protection.

It said neither there was any walk-through gate at the entrance nor any metal detector used for security clearance.

Police College Sihala: The college is located in the federal capital territory and spread over 370 acres. About 2,000 police personnel are getting training there.

No CCTV cameras are installed at the entry gates nor there any searchlight. The only two metal detectors with the college also remain 'non-functional'.
