KARACHI, Oct 13: Hassan Mahmood, a former national player, gave a glimpse of his past when he blanked his opponent Ali Panju in straight sets to advance into the 35-plus singles last eight of the 13th Pakistan International Seniors Tennis championship at the Karachi Gymkhana synthetic courts on Wednesday. Making his appearance in the city after a long layoff, Hassan, the younger brother of former Davis Cupper, Meer Mohammad, outplayed his opponent 6-2, 6-1.
Hassan has specially come from Jeddah where he in engaged in tennis coaching together with his brother.Mohammad Iltifat and Iftikhar Hussain also cruised into the 35 singles quarter-finals. The former beat Hyderabad's Shabbir Gul 6-3 (retired) while the latter got a walkover against Imran Abou Baker.
Meanwhile, first round matches of 45 plus and 55 plus singles also commenced. Results:
35 plus singles: Pre quarter-finals: Hassan Mahmood bt Ali Panju 6-2, 6-1; Mohammad Iltifat bt Shabbir Gul (Hyderabad) 6-3, (retired); Iftikhar Hussain bt Imran Abou Baker (walkover). 45 plus singles: First round: Tayyab Yousuf bt Latif Yar Khan 6-3, 6-2; Qamar Habib (Hyderabad) bt Noorullah Dhanani 7-6, 6-2; Syed Mohammad Jalal bt Fawad Ejaz Khan 6-3, 6-0; Maqsood Ismail bt Dawood Shah (walkover); Khaliq-uz-Zaman bt Andro Shalakdze (walkover); Karim Gul bt Hanif Habib 6-4, 6-2.
Second round: Tahir Gul bt Karim Gul 6-2, 6-4. 55 plus singles: First round: Zafar-ul-Hasan bt Ilyas Fazil 6-1, 6-1.
