Strike paralyses Balochistan

 QUETTA, April 12 Riots continued across Balochistan on Sunday amid a strike against the killing of three Baloch nationalist leaders.

The bodies of Ghulam Mohammad Baloch, chief of the Baloch National Movement, Lala Munir, executive committee member of the party, and Sher Mohammad Baloch, leader of Baloch Republican Party, were found in Turbat on Wednesday night after which protests erupted across the province.

Security forces used teargas and fired shots in the air to disperse the mobs blocking national highways. The troops of Frontier Corps were called out in Panjgur to control the situation.

At least two police personnel were injured in firing, while many government buildings were set on fire and several houses were attacked with grenades in different areas of the province.

The Balochistan government has extended the closure of all government and private universities, collages and schools till April 15. Examinations of the board of intermediate and secondary education and Balochistan University have been put off for which new schedules will be announced later.

In Quetta, the Sariab road and its surrounding areas remained disturbed throughout the day as groups of protesters blocked the thoroughfare by burning tyres at different points. They pelted vehicles with stones.

A group of angry demonstrators attacked a branch of the Allied Bank and set it on fire. They also set ablaze two tractors during an attack on a branch of the Zarai Taraqiati Bank in the same area.

There were clashes between security personnel and mobs at the Sariab road, Karani road, Qambrani road and Sabzal road, A vehicle was set on fire on Sabzal road.

Grenade attacks were also reported from Quetta and Dalbandin. However, no casualty was reported.

In Quetta, a grenade was hurled on the house of Prof Jamshed Ahmed, Vice-Principal of the degree college, which exploded in the courtyard, smashing windowpanes. A grenade was also thrown inside the house of Professor Riaz Ahmed, but it did not explode.

The provincial capital remained cut off from Karachi and other parts of the country because protesters had blocked RCD and National highways linking Quetta with Sindh and Punjab at Khuzdar, Sibi and Dera Murad Jamali.

Personnel of the paramilitary troops and police patrolled roads and chowks.

In Shahbaz town, a government office was attacked with grenade, damaging its walls and windowpanes.

In Dalbandin, a grenade was hurled on the house of a schoolteacher. No casualty was reported in the grenade attacks.

In Turbat, demonstrators took out rallies and staged demonstrations in the morning. An angry mob ransacked a Utility Store and set it on fire. They also attacked the office of a government officer and the boarding house of a model school, setting both the buildings on fire.

A group of demonstrators damaged a date processing plant and a Nadra office.

In Panjgur, protesters set ablaze the offices of the road and building department and ransacked a branch of a private bank. Sources said two policemen were injured in an exchange of fire.

Local administration called out paramilitary troops to help the police in maintaining law and order.

In the port city of Gwadar, political workers and activists staged demonstrations and marched on the roads. Sources said that clashes took place when demonstrators tried to move towards the port area. Police fired shots in the air and used teargas to disperse the protestors. A group of angry youths tried to attack some closed shops, but police foiled their attempt.

In Awaran, an unruly mob set ablaze an office of Nadra and attacked other government offices.

In Washik, a mob entered the office of the district nazim and ransacked it. In Surab, the furniture of a government college was set on fire.

In the industrial town of Hub, demonstrators blocked the RCD Highway by burning tyres. They did not allow traffic, affecting the work in the industrial estate because workers could not reach from Karachi.

An office of a private security company was ransacked. Police arrested 10 people in Hub.

According to reports reaching here, protest rallies were also held in Kharan, Pasni, Mand, Buleda, Nushki, Sibi, Dera Murad Jamali, Dera Allah Yar, Khuzdar, Kalat, Mastung, Mashkey and Nal.

The provincial government had taken strict security measures to maintain law and order.

Police also rounded up several persons involved in acts of violence and arson across the province.

Almost all private vehicles, buses, coaches and rickshaws remained off the roads and business activities remained suspended for a third consecutive day in Quetta.

The strike was also observed in Nushki, Dalbandin, Taftan, Mastung, Kalat, Khuzdar, Awaran, Kharan, Waushak, Panjgur, Pasni, Turbat, Hub, Lasbela, Mach, Dhadar, Sibi, Bhag, Dera Murad Jamali and Dera Allah Yar.
