Mob besieges police station

GUJRANWALA, March 24: An angry mob besieged the Garkajh Police Station here on Monday and “tried to kill” two jailed men who were being detained there on charges of desecrating the Holy Quran.

The mob also set old tyres on fire to block the traffic on Sangam Cinema Road, Jinnah Road and Garkajh Road on their way to the Model Town Police Station.

However, they dispersed peacefully when police high-ups assured them that the accused would be taken to task in accordance with law.

According to the FIR, a mentally-deranged person, Mistri Mohammad Yousaf, acquired a copy of the Quran from a mosque of Tajpura locality in Garjakh through one Shahzad Ahmad and set it on fire.

Residents of the locality gathered at the place and manhandled the two accused. The Garjakh police rushed to the spot and took the accused into custody.

The activists of some religious parties, including the Anjuman Talaba Islam led by Qari Zahid Saleem and Mohammad Iqbal Hinjra, besieged the police station and pelted stones at the building. The police foiled their attempt to enter the police station.

The activists blocked the road and chanted slogans against the accused and the police. An ASP reached the spot along with a heavy contingent of the Elite Force and assured the mob that stern action would be taken against the accused. He took the leaders to the Model Town Police Station for dialogue. The rest of the mob also reached there after marching through various roads. They dispersed peacefully afterwards.

Yousaf also set fire to the leaves of the Holy Book some two years ago. He was arrested and sent to jail. He had been released only recently.

Meanwhile, the activists of Ahl-i-Hadith Youth Force condemned the screening of x-rated movies in local cinemas, the mangers of which had displayed obscene posters on electricity polls along the GT Road.

Speaking at a news conference, the youth force leaders asked the district administration and police to take action in this regard, or they would destroy those cinemas.
