PTI chief Imran Khan speaks to Dawn.com just before he sustained serious injuries to his back and head during a public rally in Lahore on Tuesday, May 7, 2013.

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan Tuesday sustained serious injuries on his head and back after falling from a lifter during climbing up the stage installed for an election rally in Lahore.

TV footage showed him tumbling down along with three or four personal body guards on a pick up truck. The PTI chief was seen bleeding when he was taken away by his party supporters to the city's Liberty Hospital.

The 60-year-old, who has undertaken a punishing schedule of daily rallies but who is known for his physical fitness, tumbled from a riser along with several of his staff, seemingly after one of them lost their balance.

Witness Raza Zaidi told AFP that Khan was being lifted on a crane with five people but lost his balance and fell when a sixth one tried to climb up. Khan hit the lifter before falling on the ground.

Khan sustained injuries on his head and back, said the hospital sources. They also said that Khan had to have as many as 16 stitches due to the injuries he sustained at back of his head.

The rally was held near Ghalib Market in Lahore's Gulberg neighbourhood.

PTI spokeswoman Shirin Mazari told AFP Khan was injured on his forehead after falling from a height of more than seven feet (over two metres), but was conscious.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz issued sympathetic statements to their competitor in Punjab. They prayed for swift recovery of Khan.

Sharif, in rare goodwill gesture, has asked his party workers to immediately halt the media advertisements against Imran Khan.

Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain and Allama Tahirul Qadri also showed sympathy towards the PTI chief and prayed for his well being.

Famous singer and PTI leader Abrarul Haq has said the party chief is out of danger and stable now at the hospital. Another party leader Asad Umar, talking to Dawn.com, also confirmed that Khan is now conscious and well.

People at the rally venue, where thousands had gathered, expressed sadness.

“Passion and love for Imran Khan brought all these people here. We are still here, all we can do is pray now,” said Sobia Khan, a PTI supporter.

Imran Khan’s ex-wife Jamima Khan also tweeted that he is stable and conscious now

@Jemima_Khan: He's in hospital & conscious now RT @BBCBreaking: Pak politician Imran Khan injured in fall from stage at election rally

In another tweet, she quoted Khan's nephew saying that the PTI chief was reciting Kalma in ambulance but is fine now.

@Jemima_Khan: This from IK's nephew: "@HniaziISF: Chairman reciting kalma in ambulance- he is fine - plz just pray"

A CT scan of Khan's head injury will determine the further course of medical treatment, said a doctor at Shaukat Khanum Hospital where the cricket star-turned politician was taken to after receiving initial treatment at Liberty Hospital.

Dr Yasmeen Rashid further said Khan is stable and talking now.

Hundreds of well wishers and party supporters gathered outside the hospital, chanting "Long Live Imran Khan," an AFP reporter said.

Meanwhile, PTI leader Shafqat Mehmood told Dawn.com that the party chief has been asked by the doctors to suspend his ongoing election campaign for at least two weeks due to serious nature of his injuries. However, he clarified that it is a medical precaution and not a political decision.

Some of the party leaders also informed Dawn.com that injuries to Khan's back are also critical and he is unable to move freely.

In a passionate appeal to the nation from his hospital bed, Imran Khan said that they should vote for change and should continue the struggle for making a new Pakistan for the sake of their children’s future.

He asked the people to come out in big numbers to vote for change. “I have done what I could do to inspire the people for bringing change in the country. Now it is up to the masses in Pakistan to ensure the change on may 11,” said the PTI chief.

Imran Khan spoke exclusively to Dawn.com moments before the Lahore incident

The fall shows a sudden tilting over backwards, which can be due to an unusual pull or losing balance. With his penchant for not sitting long in one place, Imran must take rest, otherwise another overkill in campaigning can be threatening to the PTI. After all, we are expecting him to lead the charge in a 'changed Pakistan.' Salams

May Allah bless Imran Khan and all those injured in this accident a speedy recovery, best of health and peace. Ameen. This sad incident is a reminder to all of us that human life is the most perishable and unpredictable thing on this planet. I wish our political leaders get a lesson and run their political campaigns and day to day affairs without using foul language against each others.

One can never be sure if people like Raj can ever be open-minded? Not everything happens for political reasons, Raj. It is natural for people, unlike you, to sympathize for an unfortunate accident/injury of a human being, let alone his value to the nation.

Overloading led to accident and a push (0.08sec) by the black shirt (while standing up on left of imran) and a wrong move by the 2nd person on (Imran's) right, pulling the 3rd (grey shirt guy) led to accident. Be safe Imran.

You mean a huge lapse in common sense. No safety bar on the lift, overcrowding with 4 men clinging to one another and a fifth man trying to join his leader. But no doubt it is only a question of time before Pakistani intellectuals will come up with a conspiracy theory as you seem to be hinting at.

I wish Imran Khan safe recovery. Let me go further than that, though, and point to the appalling lack of safety consciousness that is apparent from the video. - there is no safety bar, the platform is over-crowded with men clinging to another and trying to help a third man climb up as well while the lift is in motion. I am surprised that no one commenting is interested in this glaring lack of common sense. No wonder Pakistan is such a mess. Common sense is replaced by pious references to Allah. Allah has already given you a brain. Dont blame Allah when you suffer because you refuse to use your brain. While I hope Imran Khan recovers to full health, he and his management team obviously failed to observe common sense precautions for something as basic as physical security.

Good analysis, but who is exaggerating this news? Please dont be so negative. Look at the person and his character before categorizing this as a tactic. BTW thousands of prayers and God is on his side and IA he will be back in the "business" of saving Pakistan. BTW he doesnt see it as a business, unlike his opponents. Also do you remember what happened when Imran Khan had a injured shoulder in the 1991 Cricket World Cup?

One can gauge the comittment of this extra ordinary man for his cause, pleading from the hospital bed for people to vote and change their own destiny and that of the country. The back injury is of some concern, a fighter and someone who is a born leader will Inshallah come through this. At the same time I must commend Mian Sahib for suspending all political meetings for one day as a mark of soliderity, makes me wonder why this nation has to wait for adversity for people to unite? On the other hand, this freak accident is however a reflection of mismanagement and oversight by the orginisers who had almost 6 people on a unstable fork lift.

Inshallah he will be fine. Its astonishing to see how many and how much people love you Imran Khan. So dont worry inshallah nothing will happen to Imran Khan. But this is the time for both people and PTI to step up. First we people need to show this enthusiasm on voting day and vote for him and then PTI and IK needs to show this enthusiasm in future to do and deliver for what people have voted for. I hope and pray he gets well soon and more importantly he does his best to serve this country and guide Pakistan out of this dark time. Ameen. Looks like the guy in the black shirt behind Imran started the chain reaction and pushed them off while trying to stand up him self. Poor planning and safety. All the lift required was a safety bar. Imran is a fighter. He will be back. Lucky for the security guards Imran Khan fell on them not, Nawaz Sharif. That would have been devastating :) Have to question the mind set of 2-4 folks who have thumbed down the most innocuous, non-political, comments that wished Imran recovery.

There has not been a peep out of the Pakistani press on their condition, nor has any Pakistani cared to wish for their recovery as well. The Geo newscaster was fishing for a "conspiracy theory" even before she had finished reporting the news. The mismanagement of a something as simple as ensuring proper safety precautions in a lift (a safety bar, for example) goes totally unnoticed as well.

I do not understand, why we do not pay attentions to SAFETY at all. This was the job of the security team to check everything on day prior that how many people can get on a small craine with ONLY 2 feet cover on the sides. AND WHY TO USE A CRAINE WITH NO PROPER COVER ON THE SIDES. I DO NOT SEE SUCH THINGS IN ANY OTHER COUNTRY EXCEPT SOME VERY POOR AND SMALL COUNTRIES OF AFRICA. MAY ALLAH GIVE THEM AND US SOME MORE MUCH NEEDED COMMONSENSE! MAY ALLAH SAVE IMRAN, AAMEEN SUMA AAMEEN SO HE CAN HELP PAKISTAN BUILD AND UNITED.

It's funny that you think all the thumbs down would be from Indians. By that "logic" one would have to concede that 100% of all the people on this forum would definitely be voting for IK. Do you find anything wrong with that logic? Mind you, that would be great news for India. Finally a decent Pak politician. By the way, I am of Indian origin but if I were a Pakistani, I would be voting for IK. Hope he recovers well and leads the country to prosperity. Peace

I'm sure everyone thought of that but the overwhelming response was due to the emotional aspect of it, where everyone showed concern for his health and well being, first and foremost (and the for the others that were injured). The concerned authorities/team probably have that written down for future events.

You can call it a cult but the way i see it, we need a leader to change the culture in Pakistan and promote a Just, truthful and honest society. Political parties, electoral process, system etc. are all things that work only with sincere leadership, without which they become hollow and meaningless. Similar is the love which is given to Quaid e Azam, it is heartfelt by the nation for a leader who was Just, sincere, truthful and honest. When i heard about this incident i had to stop my car as i was a bit lost and felt a strange sensation which i have never felt in my life, i felt as if my hope had been taken away This has convinced me now more than ever that i should be grateful for the fact that for once an honest leader is fighting for me and my children and i should try to help him in any way i can...it is the least i can do.

Would you say the same if people wrote "God"? Regardless of continents and cultures people still remember The Creator when in difficulties. And this man is truly loved for his courage and deeds. Just ask our neighbours who would be more than happy to get a leader like him.

It is ridiculous to say that Imran had jumped as we watched in TV he was disbalanced between the guards, however, there can be conspiracy against him because no other leader is asking vote on Ideology. He is striving for justice and education for all while the rest of the leaders encourage corruption only and instead never care to pay income tax.

As an American I want to tell all of you that our CIA does not want Imran Khan to become President of Pakistan because our government doesn´t believe he would be willing to follow orders from Washington. This was almost certainly an assassination attempt.

@sabir: Good intentions, but misplaced and emotional sentiments like this does not help. Pray for his recovery as your life is a blessing from God to you and your family so do something to improve your country's condition rather than being emotional about someone else.

Honestly, this guy Imran Khan is a total fraud. What he says is one thing but what he does is totally different. He was play boy before and suddenly become very regressive Islamic just to get votes. What is a the difference between him and any other corrupt lying politician? nothing. He is just one of them - greedy, self promoting and power hungry.

Since everything comes from God we have no way to distinguish the righteousness of an event. Only time will tell. God tests you in many ways, and he tests those that are worthy of testing to show others what His servant is like. Take the case of Job (Ayub). He was stricken for our 10 years with a disease, and yet he was patient and subservient to the will of God. He was truly deserving.
