KARACHI, Feb 16: A seminary teacher, said to be a worker of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), was gunned down in a Federal B. Area locality in an attack carried out apparently on sectarian grounds on Saturday, police said.

They said that two armed men on a motorbike intercepted 48-year-old Ghulam Sarwar in Federal B. Area’s Block 19 soon after he left a seminary, fired at him and rode away.

“There is a mosque and madressah called Maroof ul Quran Academy in Al-Noor Society where the victim was employed as a Nazra teacher,” said Samanabad SHO Inspector Zamin Abbas. “A few seconds after he left the academy, two men on a motorbike attacked him. He sustained a single bullet wound in the head and died on the spot.”

He said that the victim was a resident of Laasi Goth from where he came to the academy daily to teach students.

The killing appeared to have been carried out on sectarian grounds, the area SHO added.

Fear and tension gripped the area after the incident as traders pulled down shutters and traffic movement turned thin.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

An ASWJ spokesman claimed that the victim was an active worker and looked after party affairs in the Laasi Goth area.

He condemned the killing and the ongoing wave of terrorism and asked authorities to act against terrorists.

He said that the victim, father of six, hailed from Dera Ghazi Khan.

Man found shot dead in Malir A motorcycle mechanic was found shot dead in a Malir area on Saturday.

Police said that 42-year-old Nawaz Ali left home in Malir on Friday evening to visit Akbar Road for some business deals.

“But he did not return and his cellphone was found switched off,” said an official at the Memon Goth police station. “His family later lodged a complaint with the Khokhrapar police station. On Saturday morning, area people informed us that they had found a body lying in the bushes.”

The body was later moved to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.

The victim was hit by a single bullet in the head while his motorbike, mobile phone and wallet were missing.
