Education and manners

Published December 21, 2012

WHILE driving with a friend in the posh Defence Housing Authority of Karachi on a lazy Sunday morning our car came to a stop on a red light.

As the signal changed to green, my friend realised that the ignition of her car had turned off. Since her car runs on CNG, it took her 10 to12 seconds to restart the car and move on.

In the meantime both cars behind us started to honk incessantly. As we moved, the first car to overtake us was a black brand new Mercedes. The very decent-looking owner/driver of the car stared at us with disgust.

The second car overtook in speed and the educated and seemingly well-off male driver deliberately knocked the bumper of his car with my friend’s car, damaging its side, bumper and headlight. As our car slowed down, the man sped away.

I have been driving in Karachi for over 20 years and in recent times have faced numerous such incidents where the rich, educated and decent-looking people turn into egoistic drivers and behave in the most obnoxious ways.

When incidents such as these occur, I often wonder what good is their education if they can’t use their common sense on the roads.
