Karachi: a heap of arms

IT is an established fact now that the people of Karachi are living on a heap of arms and ammunition.

Unfortunately, these weapons are possessed mostly by criminals and militants who have taken the whole city hostage with their ruthless crime spree.

The government has failed miserably in recovering illegal arms and ammunition and the situation seems to be getting worse in the days to come.

I would suggest the government to encourage peace-loving citizens to acquire arms and get necessary training and allow them to carry weapons in a concealed manner, without any legal technicalities attached.

Once the criminals know that any vehicle they try to rob could have fully armed and trained occupants, these criminals will think a hundred times before snatching a vehicle or robbing its occupants.

This will eventually reduce the crime rate. In a city where the law of the jungle applies, all citizens have the right to protect themselves, their families and properties with all available resources.

@cyrus ! Please don't forget the mass shooting..........a person killed dozen and injured 58 in Colorado , who thought himself as a dark knight movie joker, so please don't give us the lame example about the Colorado tranquility . New Zealand, Iceland, Singapore, Switzerland, Qatar and Vatican are the countries with least crime rates. And all those countries have very strict gun laws. Funny thing is that in new Zealand even the cops don't carry the guns with them (only in extreme cases). Baton works perfectly fine for them.

MY SUGGESTION: A group from our own army(non political/unbiased) should take over Karachi for a short period, declare a curfew until all weapons licensed or otherwise are recovered. They must get the police and rangers away from this operation. If necessary, shoot to kill order may be used.

The question of carrying or possessing arms needs urgent and serious attention, especially by the people who are responsible for the protection of life, property and peace of the citizens. The matter is of serious concern. It requires immediate attention. A survey must be conducted to get the views of the citizens in this regard. Later a discussion in the assemblies should be made and a decision taken after thorough deliberation on all aspects of this issue. A public awareness on all aspects of this issue is required before the polls. Most of the people of our society including me, I think, are not fully informed about the realities and the issues. It is the greatest tragedy of our society that truth and facts are distorted and concealed by 'All' for the promotion of vested interests. Nobody is prepared to know, speak or listen the whole truth. This problem is just one indication of the grave problems our society is facing and is going to face in the future. Unless a proper diagnosis is made and root causes of the problems identified, how can be lasting solutions got. We will have to shun all bigotry and hypocrisy if we really want to resolve the problems of our people, society, country and the world. We are destined to fail as long as we continue to isolate the problems and seek the solutions in piecemeal. Let us all be sincere, honest, and truthful first to ourselves and then to others and then hope for effective and lasting solutions.

In Florida one can walk into a gun store and buy a gun. Florida also allows citizens to carry concealed weapons; yet the crime , specially gun related, is sky high. The answer is for law enforcement agencies to apply the law and apprehend criminals. Then the courts should mete out appropriate punishment. Arming every citizen to the teeth will only cause disaster.

Very true, every one has a right to self defence. The criminals do not care of any law and are armed tooth and nail so why not allow law abiding citizens to carry arm/s as a deterent.

A person with a gun thinks he is invincible. I dont think it is a good idea to have millions of such people on the streets of Karachi where law and order is non-existent.

It has been proven in the United States that there is less crime in the state of Colorado where all citizens have the "right to carry" a fire arm. As Mister Faruqi claims here, criminals in Colorado know they might meet armed resistance. Crime stats show fewer robberies in the City of Colorado Springs and City of Denver since the law was enacted by the state legislature.

and what if someone successfully bring down a robber or two.....who's gonna save him from our corrupt police and judiciary? its the job of these institutions to capture the criminals but these institutions have been politicized, and its these political parties who provide shelter to these criminals... so either way we the citizens are at loss.

You cannot compare Denver and Karachi. Adding arms in Karachi will make the situation worse. In fact a law should be passed to completely disarm Karachi. After the arms turn-in period, anyone caught with arms should be severely punished (public flogging with a minimum 2-year jail sentence) regardless of his party or civil government connections. When the Police is the only organization that is allowed to carry arms, law and order will be established.

I think it must be other way around, take back all the weapon licenses from common citizen, re-assign them to only security companies that's it, anyone with a weapon must be in uniform. Order the 2-3 year jail for anyone found with weapon and apply it all over the city. For a month or two assign the FC to Karachi and clean-up the weapons with surgical raids. Trust me giving weapon to all the people would only bring chaos and not stability.
