LAHORE, Oct 6: Participants at a seminar urged the Lahore Parking Company on Saturday to introduce an innovative and integrated parking system to solve the increasing parking problems the people are facing in the Punjab capital.

The seminar titled “Parking Issues and Remedies” was organized by the Urban Unit, a subsidiary of the Planning and Development Department, here at the Punjab Public Library.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Nasir Javaid, an urban development expert, sought for establishing a think tank centre of excellence at the City District Government of Lahore in order to plan, design, develop and formulate policies to deal with various urban issues, including parking, transport, town planning and others.

He urged the management of the newly established LPC, a subsidiary of the CDGL, not to make revenue generation its priority. “If the LPC core objective will be to generate or earn revenue, it will be flopped,” he said, urging it to work under innovative and integrated approaches.

While giving his input, City and Regional Planning Department (UET) Chairman Dr Ghulam Abbas said that various civic agencies, including the LPC, should plan for reducing car parking.

“It can only be possible if we give people a state of the art public transport in the city like the Metro Bus System in future,” he added. He said the quarters concerned should also focus on constructing park and ride and automated parking plazas in the city to cater to the need of parking space in the city.

Municipal Services EDO Mahmood Tamanah termed revenue generation a must for the sustainability of LPC. He said the company also planned to construct automated parking plazas in the city. Earlier, LPC official Aamir Saeed gave a presentation about the objectives and future plan of the company. Rafay Alam, Zahra Batool and others also spoke on the occasion. — Staff Reporter
