LAHORE, Sept 28: The 105th birthday of Bhagat Singh, who was among the most influential revolutionary heroes of the struggle for Indian independence, was celebrated at two venues in the city on Friday.

The events were organised by the Bhagat Singh Memorial Society that comprises some 24 political and non-political organisations.

The first and prime venue where the event was held was Dayal Singh College library, attended by members of civil society and others.

On the occasion, Ajoka Theatre screened a film on Bhagat Singh directed by Nirvan Nadeem that was appreciated by the audience. Ajoka artistes also sang songs from the group’s famous play on the hero.

In their speeches on the occasion, the speakers highlighted the life and personality of Bhagat Singh.

Iqbal Virk from Bhagat Singh’s village, Pinga, Jarawanwala tehsil, said he was living in the house revolutionary hero used to live.

He said the primary school in the village got constructed by Bhagat Singh’s grandfather was in pathetic condition. He also threw light on personal life of the hero.

Farooq Tariq of Labour Party said a delegation of some 30 or so people from India, including Bhagat Singh’s nephew, also wanted to visit Pakistan to mark the event but they were denied visas.

The other event was held at Shadman Chowk where Bhagat Singh was hanged in 1931.

A large number of people from all walks of life gathered at the venue where a cake was cut to celebrate the hero’s birthday.

Bhagat Singh Memorial Committee, on the occasion, demanded the government should name Shadman Chowk after the hero.

They also demanded Bhagat Singh’s house at Pinga village be declared ‘Bhagat Singh Liberation Museum’ and the school founded by his grandfather be restored to its original shape.

The committee announced the school’s renovation would be done with the help of funds to be raised by involving the public as well as the government.
