ISLAMABAD: Six bus stands were dismantled by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) in an operation against illegal bus stands at Faizabad.

CDA spokesperson Malik Saleem said the operation was conducted by enforcement and environment wing officials, with assistance from the Islamabad Capital Territory administration and the police.

He said heavy machinery was used to demolish the constructions Mr Saleem said the operation was conducted against various companies, including Islamabad Express and Shuja Express. Vehicles parked beneath the sheds were evacuated prior to demolition, he said, adding that a few individuals attempted unsuccessfully to stop the operation.

Action against illegal bus stands is being taken on orders from the Islamabad High Court.

There are currently no bus terminals in the capital, as the CDA has yet to build a proposed terminal in I-11, spread over 32 acres.

According to the city’s master plan, I-8 was reserved for a terminal as well as a centre for other forms of transport, but a controversial decision in 1990 by the CDA and the federal government changed I-8 to a residential sector.

In the absence of a proper bus terminal, several illegal terminals have been established for intercity bus services along I.J. Principal Road near Faizabad on private land or greenbelts, which contribute to traffic congestion on nearby roads.

However, there are legitimate bus stands in Karachi Company.
