Aqeel, Ahmed, Muzammil in semis

KARACHI: Pakistan number one Aqeel Khan beat Usman Rafiq, Ahmed Chaudhry beat Hira Ashok while Muzammil Murtaza outplayed Abdaal Haider in the quarterfinals of the mens singles event here on the second day of the 1st Ebrahim Merchant Memorial tennis tournament at Karachi Gymkhana on Thursday.

In the ladies contest, Esha Jawad beat Absara 6-0, 6-0 while in the Under-18 quarters, Raza Sawani and Nouman Aftab and Sahibzada Ali beat their respective rivals to advance to the semifinals.

Men’s singles (2nd round): Abdaal Haider bt Nameer Shamsi 7-6, 6-4, 6-3; Mudassir Murtaza bt Umair Saeed 6-2, 6-0; Mohammad Abid bt Rashid Malik 6-2, 6-1

Men’s singles (quarter-finals): Aqeel Khan bt Usman Rafiq 6-2,6-4; Ahmed Chaudhry bt Hira Ashok 2-6, 6-1, 6-3; Muzammil Murtaza bt Abdaal Haider 6-3, 6-7. 6-3; Mohammad Abid bt Mudassir Murtaza 6-4, 6-1.

Ladies singles (2nd round): Esha Jawad bt Absara 6-0, 6-0.

U-18 (quarter-finals): Raza Sawani bt Zubair Raja 6-1,6-3; Nouman Aftab bt Hafiz Arbab 4-6,6-4,6-2; Sahibzada Ali bt Hassan Farooq 6-2,6-2.

U-16 (2nd round) Zubair Raja bt Asad Bachani 6-0, 6-0; Noor e -Mustafa bt Ashish Kumar 6-4,5-7 6-2; Shazil Malik bt Erham Mir 6-0,6-0 Amin Shafi bt M Abdullah 6-0,6-0.

U-14 (quarter-finals): Hamid Israr bt Mahatir Mohammad 6-4,6-4; Yahya Hasan bt Asher Mir 6-7, 6-1, 10-6; Ashish Kumar bt Samad Arejo 1-6,7-6,6-3.

Men’s doubles: Raza Sawani/Sahibzada Ali bt Nameer Shamsi/Umer Shahid 1-6, 6-3 15-.13; Reza Ali Mirza/Asad Ali Bhagat bt Moeez Akram/M Shahab 6-0,6-0.
