LAHORE: Punjab University Institute of Social and Cultural Studies’ Prof Dr Muhammad Hafeez died here on Sunday. He was 59.

Diagnosed with a liver cancer, he was admitted to the Shaikh Zayed Hospital Lahore where he remained under treatment for a month and on Sunday he breathed his last.

He was laid to rest at the Punjab University New Campus graveyard. A large number of people including teachers and his students attended the funeral.

Dr Hafeez had also served the Punjab University as dean and director Institute of Social and Cultural Studies. He also served as Aitchison College principal for a year.

Dr Hafeez had done his PhD from the Australian National University, Canberra in 2000 after obtaining two post-graduation degrees in Sociology from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada in 1986 and Punjab University in 1982. He also had got pilot training in 1979 and received the Commercial Pilots License from the Civil Aviation Authority.

Dr Hafeez also supervised the work of PhD students in the field of sociology, population health, management/administration and conflict resolution.

He also wrote columns for different publications including English dailies. Dr Hafeez is survived by three children.

PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran and the Academic Staff Association have expressed their grief and sorrow over the death of Dr Hafeez. They prayed for the departed soul. They said Almighty Allah may grant courage to the members of bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.
