RAWALPINDI: As many as 90 police officials serving in the Rawalpindi region were demoted for getting out-of-turn promotions on Wednesday, including a deputy superintendent of police who was demoted to the rank of a constable.

Of the officials whose promotions were withdrawn, 15 were serving as either Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) or Sub-inspector (SI), three were demoted from DSP to Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) , three inspectors were demoted to sub-inspectors, eight inspectors were demoted to ASI and one inspector was demoted to head constable.

Similarly, eight inspectors were demoted to ASI and one inspector was demoted to head constable. Eight inspectors were made constable, six sub-inspectors were made head constables, 23 sub-inspectors were made constable while 16 ASIs were made constables.

Regional Police Officer Mohammad Wisal Fakhar Sultan Raja told Dawn that the seniority of police officers will be re-affixed within two months and that they will soon be posted at different places.

Earlier on June 23, 85 police officers of the Punjab police, including nine from Rawalpindi, who had been promoted out-of-turn were deployed as officer on special duty (OSD) by the Inspector General of Punjab Police, Mushtaq Ahmed Sukhera.

All the officers who were demoted in January 2016 according to orders of the Supreme Court were still working on the same posts and were just made OSD last week.

Those who were posted as OSD in Rawalpindi include were Senior Superintendent of Police Operation Malik Karamat, DSP Waris Khan Zaman Raza, DSP Iqbal Hussain Kazmi, DSP CIA Malik Mohammad Afsar, DSP Malik Omer Hayat, DSP Malik Safdar, DSP Malik Anwar, DSP Iftikhar Ahmed and DSP Asghar Cheema.
