Research from the International Diabetes Federation predicts that more than 400m people around the world are living with diabetes today, and that without concerted action the number of cases could grow by 50pc in the next 25 years. If that prediction proves to be accurate, the economic burden would be enormous: Treating 642m people with diabetes in 2040 could cost up to $802bn.
