Rangers’ mandate

Published September 3, 2015

YOUR editorial “Rangers’ mandate” (Aug 29) has no relevance to the Karachi operation and more so to ground realities. Stories of massive corruption while Dr Asim was minister for petroleum are no more a secret.

Anybody can be arrested on corruption charges by police but under the new laws people involved in terrorist funding are to be tried in ATC.

Under the extraordinary situation, extra ordinary laws have been enacted along with the 21st amendment to try people in military courts. Such arrests have nothing to do with the ongoing operation. One has to look at the results. Gone are the days when 10 to 15 innocent people were killed on a daily basis. Peace has been restored in Karachi because most of the terrorists have been held.

The conclusion drawn in the editorial that the provincial government in Sindh is doing practically nothing to tackle corruption and crime negates the criticism on Rangers. Threats by various leaders, including the chief minister, to agencies and federal government makes no sense.
