KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has called upon the federal government to carry out an investigation to find out the ‘actual source’ of funding of the sit-in held by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) in Islamabad last year.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, MQM leader Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said the nation wanted to know at whose behest PTI chief Imran Khan had staged the sit-in for 126 days.

“Time has come for political parties and all democratic institutions to be united and hold all those accountable who want to derail democracy.”

Accompanied by Kanwar Naveed Jameel and Wasim Akhtar, Dr Siddiqui said Mr Khan had wasted the nation’s time and urged the federal government to conduct the investigation in light of the report of the Judicial Commission.

“Imran Khan and his party should be asked from where they got billions of rupees which they spent to organise the sit-in,” said Mr Akhtar, adding: “The government should also investigate the statement of Defence Minister Khawaja Asif in which he alleged that [the then] ISI chief was behind the PTI’s sit-in.”

Mr Jameel said he had written a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan and asked it to unseat the PTI chairman as member of the National Assembly under Article 62 of the Constitution.
