KARACHI: Celebrated Pakistan middle-order batsman Younis Khan pledged on Wednesday that he has not set any deadline as to when would be calling time on his glorious international career.

Speaking at a programme organised by prominent sports organiser Nadeem Omar to honour the legendary batsman with cash award and gold medal for reaching coveted milestone of 100 Tests during the recent series in Sri Lanka, the former captain reiterated his ambition to continue playing Test cricket as long as he remained fit and in good form.

“Often people have been asking about the cut-off date [quitting playing for Pakistan] but my mind is very clear on this. As long as I am enjoying the game there is no reason for me to throw in the towel just yet,” Younis told the gathering which also included a number of former national players. “And although I’ve not been part of the one-day side since the World Cup, I have not yet given up hope of playing in that format as well.”

Younis scored a memorable undefeated 171 to play a pivotal role in Pakistan’s remarkable fourth-innings record chase of 382-3 in the final Test at Pallekele last week that enabled Misbah-ul-Haq’s team to seal the series 2-1.

Younis credited his success and fame during his illustrious career that began in February 2000 to a number of people.

“Honestly, I won’t be sitting here if not for the support of many wonderful people in my life. Without their encouragement and guidance, I would have never achieved what I have got today,” Younis remarked. “The biggest achievement in my career is getting the chance to play for Pakistan. What I’m today it is because of Pakistan and the identity my country has given me.”

Former chief selectors Salahuddin Ahmed, Iqbal Qasim and Moin Khan along with Rashid Latif paid glowing tribute to Younis.

Nadeem also complimented Younis for the numerous records he has achieved in Test cricket and said that every youngster should emulate Younis as their role model.

Young opener Shan Masood, who plays for Pakistan Cricket Club in Karachi’s local competitions, was also honoured for scoring a maiden Test century while sharing a third-wicket partnership of 242 with Younis against Sri Lanka. He was presented with a gold medal and Rs100,000.
