BAHAWALNAGAR: Police arrested on Tuesday a lady health visitor (LHV) after a woman and her newly-born child died at her clinic.

Police said Najma Bibi, mother of four, of Farooqabad, was treated at Iram Clinic on Chishtian Road for labour pains. After the delivery of a baby, both the mother and the child died.

LHV Zubaida, who handled the delivery, shifted both the baby and the mother to the Bahawalnagar District Headquarters Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

The family of the deceased staged a demonstration by placing bodies at Bahawli Chowk and later tried to burn the clinic.

KILLED: A man allegedly killed his pregnant wife in Dahranwala on Tuesday.

Tauseef Bibi, of Chak 171-M, had married Akhtar four years back. The couple failed to develop intimacy with each other and would often quarrel over issues.

On Tuesday, Akhtar allegedly tortured her and when her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to the Chishtian Tehsil Headquarters Hospital where she died after giving birth to a dead child.

Dahranwala police started investigation.

DEATH: Bahawalnagar Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Shamshad Ali Rana handed down death sentence to Khursheed Ahmad, of Shiekhupura, in the murder case of Dr Jameel, of Faqirwali.

The judge also fined the convict Rs200,000 to be paid to the heirs as compensation. In case of defaulting on compensation, the convict will further undergo six-month rigorous imprisonment.

In another case, Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Masroor Anwar Khan sentenced Jamshed Mehboob to 10-year rigorous imprisonment on Tuesday.

The convict was imposed a Rs2.17 million diyat. He was also sentenced to 10-year rigorous imprisonment and a Rs50,000 fine. According to the prosecution, Jamshed had chopped off the nose of Farida Bashir on Feb 13, 2014, for refusing his proposal.
