KARACHI: PPP Vice President Sherry Rehman returned unopposed as senator from Sindh on Monday when the opponent withdrew his candidature.

Monday was fixed for scrutiny of nomination papers of candidates running for the seat that had fallen vacant after the resignation of PPP Senator Abdul Latif Ansari. He was elected to the upper house in March.

Nadeem Bhutto with his proposer and seconder appeared before Sindh Election Commissioner Tanveer Zaki.

Ms Rehman also appeared before the official with her proposers and seconders. She had filed two nomination papers. In one of them she was nominated by MPA Mahesh Kumar Malani and the nomination was seconded by MPA Abdul Karim Soomro. MPAs Shamim Mumtaz and Shahnaz Bano were proposer and seconder in Ms Rehman’s other form.

After the nomination papers of the two candidates were found in order, Mr Bhutto announced his withdrawal from the race.

The official announcement about the election of Ms Rehman will be made on Tuesday, the last day for filing objections to acceptance of nomination papers for the Senate seat.
