QUETTA: Death-row prisoner Saulat Mirza held a final meeting with his wife and other family members through a video link on Monday afternoon at Balochistan’s Machh Jail.

Machh Jail Superintendent Muhammad Ishaq Zehri told DawnNews that Mirza’s wife, sister, brother and other relatives were among those allowed to have a last meeting with the condemned prisoner, who is scheduled to be hanged on May 12 (tomorrow) at 4:30am, according to the death warrant issued by an anti-terrorism court in Karachi.

Doctor in Machh Jail also conducted medical checkup of Saulat Mirza, after which he was declared to be in good health.

"Saulat is fine and he can be executed per schedule," Dr. Sajjad told DawnNews. According to jail administration, Saulat Mirza's relatives held four-hour long meeting with him.

"A total of 18 family members held meeting with Saulat," said Jail Superintendent Ishaq Zehri.

Security was also provided to Mirza’s family members who had travelled to Machh in Balochistan's sensitive Bolan district. Strict security measures have been undertaken in and around the jail premises to avert any untoward incident before the high-profile prisoner is executed.

Levies, Balochistan Constabulary and Frontier Corps personnel have been patrolling around the premises since the issuance of Mirza’s latest death warrant.

According to jail sources, Mirza requested Machh's judicial magistrate to postpone his execution by a week.

Mirza was initially scheduled to be hanged on March 19. But a video footage of Mirza hurling serious allegations at Altaf Hussain and other MQM leaders made rounds on television channels a few hours before his execution; since then his hanging has been postponed on several occasions.

A Joint Interrogation Team was later formulated to investigate Mirza's allegations against MQM leaders.

Saulat Ali Khan, better known as Saulat Mirza and a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), was sentenced to death by an ATC in 1999 for killing then managing director of Karachi Electric Supply Corporation Shahid Hamid, his driver, and a guard in 1997 in Karachi's Defence area.

The MQM had however said that Mirza had been fired from the party much before the murder took place. Mirza, however, denies the party's claim.

Three more death warrants

Balochistan Home and Tribal Affairs Department has issued death warrants of three condemned prisoners in Machh Jail.

Sources in Home Department told DawnNews that death warrants of condemned prisoners including Muhammad Musa, Ali Gul and Akhtar Muhammad have been issued. The Jail Superintendent would fix the date for execution within seven days, they said. The prisoners were involved in murder cases and courts had already convicted them.
