KARACHI: Police investigating the murder of a Karachi University teacher have formally conducted the forensic examination of the bullets used in the killing and found no past record of the weapon in any other case, said a senior police officer on Wednesday.

“The investigators have received a forensic report that suggests that the weapon used in the killing of Assistant Professor Waheed-ur-Rehman of the mass communication department last week had not been used in other murders in the past,” said Central SSP (Investigation) Arab Mahar at a press conference.

The investigating team held discussions with the faculty of the Karachi University mass communication department, the slain professor’s students, his close friends and relatives. They all were of the opinion that Prof Waheed aka Yasir Rizvi was a “thorough gentleman” and he had no enmity with anyone, the police officer said.

The police were probing the murder from different angles and it was not appropriate to share initial findings of the investigation with the media at this stage, said SSP Mahar.

Earlier, Central SSP Capt Chaudhry Asad Ali told the press conference that the Khwaja Ajmair Nagri police had arrested two suspects belonging to a political party who confessed to their involvement in the killing of 20 people including workers of different political and religious parties.

The officer said that the police detained Mehboob Ali alias Tomator who confessed to his involvement in the killing of six people, including a former councillor of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and workers of the Jamaat-i-Islami and the Sunni Tehreek. The other suspect, Adnan alias Mulla, confessed to his involvement in the murder of 14 persons including workers of the Pakistan Peoples Party, the MQM and the banned Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan.

The police had seized two pistols and two hand grenades from their custody, he said.
