Iran suspends Saudi pilgrimage flights over sexual assault allegations

DUBAI: Iran has suspended flights to Saudi Arabia for the year-round Umrah pilgrimage over allegations that Saudi security officers sexually assaulted two Iranian boys, Culture Minister Ali Jannati said on Monday.

The move is likely to deepen tensions between the two regional powers, who are at odds over the war in Yemen.

The teenage boys alleged last week that the officers abused them while conducting a security search at Jeddah airport.

"Until these guilty people are put on trial and punished, the Umrah will be stopped and Iranian flights will be suspended," the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) cited Jannati as saying.

The boys were returning to Tehran from the Umrah, a pilgrimage to Makkah that can be undertaken at any time of the year other than during the Hajj.

Several hundred protesters marched on the Saudi embassy in Tehran on Saturday, despite a ban on public demonstrations.

Jannati said the Saudi authorities had arrested the perpetrators and promised to punish them, ISNA reported.

Iran is showing lot of courage towards it's citizens. Had this been Pakistan, there wouldn't be any issue raised. The exploitation of Pakistani workers and beheading of Pakistanis in KSA is prime example of this.

Typical myopic leadership.Frisk checking at airport is a routine business.In past drugs narcotics and even explosives substances have been recovered hidden in private parts.Than why make such mess out of it and give a collective punishment to your own umrah pilgrims.. Next, this is not mere political point scoring by Iranians, they are hitting the saudis where it matters.. Annual pilgrims, umras and haj are source of huge revenue for saudi arabia.

The treatment of Saudis towards Pakistanis, and citizens of some other countries is also not very good so how come Umrah flights are still operating from these countries? Is it because our governments don't care about their citizens and have not been able to curtail this bad treatment? Is it because the Iranian government raised their voices for bad treatment against their citizens that they have to face the consequences? Saudis treat the Americans and Europeans very well, so are they suggesting that all muslims should become citizens of USA or Europe before they think of performing Umrah!!!???

Wise decision from the Iranian Government. I have been advocating for a long time that Muslim should avoid going to KSA for pilgrimage, because all the money they spend in Arabia is used for the purchase of arms from America and Israel and ends up being used against the Muslims. Also the same money is responsible for the creation of outfit like Al Qaeda and ISIL, who are responsible for all the destruction in Iraq and Syria. Regarding the Saudi security personal, well you can not blame them for their ugly behavior. In a country, where a old rich Saudi can have four wives plus concubines, not many women are left for the young bachelor. Well this shortage of eligible women leave the poor bachelor no choice but to indulge in this unholy acts.

Pakistan must get seriously get involved with Turkey to bring peace and get Iran to withdraw Houthis from Aden back to sana. Then a round table negotiated settlement must ensue. With SA and Iran.It must also say what it is doing and has done. It should behave as a regional power it is. Don't slink back into the ' making money mode', Pakistan needs leadership. Appoint a high level personality like shibzada YAqoob Khan, ex foreign minister, as minister for foreign affairs and let him do the facilitating. Act not react.

@haris It makes sense. Hit where it matters the most i.e at your pocket. KSA earns a lot through these pilgrimages and when the traffic will slow down, naturally their earnings will also go down which will hit their economy. The world does not revolve around religion, it's the money that makes the mare go. Religion is for your own self, money is to survive in the world otherwise people will manipulate you in their own interest by lending you the money. Like KSA is doing to us by twisting our arms to join the war, without giving a thought that it's not in our interest.

In one Haj season, the Saudi government earns approximately six billion dollars. If you add the earnings of Saudia airlines, local transporters, hotels, food vendors, etc, the total earnings would reach about eight billion dollars which is more that Pakistan's six month budget. And despite so much earnings, there is no decent transport system between Makkah, Medinah, between Makkah, Arafat, Mina, etc. The living conditions, tents, bathrooms in Mina are pathetic and prone to wide spread of diseases. And remember millions of poor people in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Maldives, etc save money all their life to be able to perform one obligatory Haj. And their hard earned money is used by Arab rulers for their lavish life styles.

This matter needs prompt attention. One that this act is totally punishable by death and the other two muslim countries are at odd. Saudi Arabia cannot be held responsible as long the right criminals are punished according to the Islamic codes. Bad apples are everywhere. This brings to me a very important point - if rulers are honest and believes the same punishement even for their family members will set a good example.

Holy places of Islam should be given the same status as Vatican. Conditions for pilgrims should be improved and it should be administered by an Islamic Trust of Muslim Countries around the World. There is enough money to finance the administration. You can not expect House of Saud to do anything better than what they are doing.

Look at the transport in your own cities where passengers are dumped in vehicles like cattle. Do you know how much it costs to bring millions of gallons of potable water and water for the bath rooms in Mina and Arafat where no ground water is available? From where you got the statistics about Saudi Government earning billions of Dollars from Haj? Saudi Government has no share in the haj fees paid by Hajis. It all goes to service providers. Do you think that the accommodation, food and other services provided by various private organisation come free of cost? Better check your info before you comment.

@Ahmer Arogance of Saudis is a big question mark for every visitor. I had to confront a Saudi group which was having a human barricade around their female folk during Haj. One of them quevered at me for "touching the Saudi men while having Twaf and started to utter some thing in his mother tongue. When Instarted in English my group mates asked me to be cool as it was HAJ when we should not have any querels. It is a fact Arabs, specially the Saudis and Gulf Arabs do not consider th other Muslims at par with them and look down at them with hateful eyes. Our gov should have had snubed the UAE Minister for his unwanted reaction and strong worded protest should have had been lodged with the UAE Gov by summoning their Ambassador to Foreing Office so that they could read what is in store for them.

Unnecessary move by iran and unnecessary harsh comments. Personally i do know sheikhs are arrogant. But even though its a serious crime , it should be dealt as one -- a serious crime --- especially when culprits are arrested already. My pakistani brothers -- we have terrorists who are facing charges of killing innocents in india -- and we let them free / even protect them. We ! It can be performed any time. It is high time Muslims the world over gave a thought to turning the Holy Places over to a joint consortium of Muslim countries to manage so that the poor Muslims going there are protected from the arbitrary and high handed treatment at the hands of its current arrogant managers!

@apoorva That's true. Haj has always been a source of income for them. When they had no oil, they subsisted on dates and Haj. Now that they have too much money from oil, their arrogance has correspondingly increased. But income from ;Haj cannot be underestimated either. They have no empathy with the poor Hajis most of whom spend their lifetime savings on this religious obligation, and also face maltreatment at the hands of Saudi managers. Some solution ought to be found for this.

It is not a news at all. Saudis routinely molest and rape, especially the females visitors and foreign workers in their country. If anybody complains she is detained for prostitution and flogged.
