KARACHI: Two policemen were shot dead in the Lea Market area on Monday evening, police said.
They added that police constables Idris Shah, 49, and Nadeem Anwar Lakhiar, 45, were performing their duty at the milk market when three armed motorcyclists fired at them and rode away.
The two policemen suffered serious wounds and were shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where doctors declared constable Shah dead.
City SP Aftab Nizamani said that later the wounded constable, Lakhiar, died during treatment.
Senior medico-legal officer Dr Nisar Shah said that constable Shah sustained seven bullet wounds while Lakhiar suffered a single bullet wound in the head. They were residents of Khadda Market in Lyari and Naushehro Feroze, respectively.
“Some days ago, milk sellers had received extortion chits and we deployed four policemen for their protection,” said City SP Nizamani.
He added that two of the four policemen had gone somewhere in the area, while the victims were performing their duty when three assailants, including one wearing a helmet, targeted them.
The officer said that investigators believed that Lyari gangsters and Jihadi elements could be involved in the killing.
