MUZAFFARGARH: Two robbers were killed and as many constables injured in an ‘encounter’ here on Thursday in Kot Addu tehsil.

DPO Rai Zameerul Haq received information that some robbers were looting commuters in Bet Zaini. He ordered Qureshi Chowk police to arrest the suspects. On seeing the police, the suspects fired on the personnel. During a shootout, Asghar alias Yari Sohrani and Fida Sagu were killed while constables Ameen and Abdul Qayyum suffered injuries.

The injured constables were shifted to DHQ Hospital.

The DPO claimed the suspects were involved in more than 100 cases. The bodies were removed for autopsy.

ACCIDENT: As many as 10 passengers were injured in a collision between a van and a tractor-trolley at Mahmood Kot on Thursday morning.

A Multan-bound van collided with a tractor-trolley as a result of which 10 passengers suffered injuries and they were shifted to Nishtar Hospital, Multan. Police have registered a case against owner of the tractor.

DISTINCTION: Baran Shafqat, son of Qazi Shafqat, who got first position in Dera Ghazi Khan board and stood second in Punjab, was given guard of honour by DPO Rai Zameerul Haq and his team in Police Lines on Thursday.

Talking to Dawn, Baran Shafqat said he hailed from a poor family and his father worked in a mills.

Baran, who obtained 1003 marks in FSC pre-engineering, said: “I didn’t believe when the DPO invited me to Police Lines for congratulations and certificate with Rs10,000 prize.” He said some teachers extended financial assistance to him. “Last year I got a laptop from the chief minister and many a time family members and friends asked me to sell it but I refused.”

SP (investigation) Rao Arif Aslam gave him certificate and cash prize with guard of honour.
