KARACHI: The Karachi University and the City colleges reopened yesterday after 50 days’ break due to students’ agitation. Normal attendance was reported from the degree colleges, including the D.J. Science and the Islamia Colleges — centres of the agitation — intermediate colleges and higher secondary schools. Dr I.H. Qureshi, Vice-Chancellor of Karachi University, when contacted, said that the attendance was thin presumably because the University had reopened after a long recess.

He hoped that the attendance would improve in a day or two. No untoward incident was reported from any institution, except a brawl among the student leaders at D.J. Science College following a heated argument between two rival groups of students.

The University, college and school students, dressed in their uniform and carrying books, were seen going to their respective institutions. Many others were observed waiting for transport at various bus stops. The special transport service between the City and the New Campus of the Karachi University which began yesterday was functioning normally. A number of police pickets were seen at different places in the City yesterday. As life in the educational institutions returned to “normal” after 50 days suspension, serious discord among the student leaders has come to limelight. A Students General Body Meeting, called by the student leaders at the D.J. Science College yesterday morning was poorly attended as most of the students were attending their classes. The girl students stayed away from this meeting.
