Website review: My garbology

Published November 22, 2014

WE throw loads of trash everyday without realising the amount and the type of waste we dump in the same trash bag! Sometimes it is batteries while sometimes it is plastic or glass mixed with leftover edible stuff. This is extremely hazardous not only for the animals that eat from garbage but it is equally dangerous for the environment when the garbage it burnt at the dumping area.

Naturebridge’s Garbology is a site dedicated to awareness regarding garbage dump and how we can play our part in making this world a better place. The site offers a little sorting activity, which is also a great intro to the world of environment awareness. Kids of all ages can learn from cute little cans, who teach which type of trash goes into which container and why.

When you open the website, you see a cute animation of a cockroach crawling around a garbage can. In the section ‘Where should my waste go’, you can learn about Garbology which is the study of waste and then play on the animation/activity.

There are four hand-drawn cans – ‘reuse’, ‘compost’, ‘recycle’ and ‘landfill’. Below them are some household stuff that you have to put in the specific cans where they actually belong. Then begins a very amazing animation in which each little trash can tells you what happens when you throw specific trash in them. Hard-hitting facts are presented in such a nice animated way that kids can learn easily and can also remember afterwards.

You really can’t go wrong with this step-by-step game that has text, audio and feedback that helps kids go green. So if you want to know how much water it takes to grow enough cotton for just one T-shirt or how electronics dumped in the waste are linked to cancer, birth defects and brain damage, visit http://www.naturebridge.org/garbology.php
