Polio eradication could be one area where Pakistan and India can work together. Pakistan can benefit from the India's experience in eradicating the disease. However, some top official or politician should make the eradication a personal goal.

Finally we are number one in something. Hopefully we would maintain this position for a long while. There is no Dharna or jihad against these diseases that are crippling and killing our children.

@NORI How does that help? It is not the Pakistani governments inability to vaccinate people that is the problem. The people are holding back due the incorrect peception that the polio vaccine causes infertility. This kind of attitude is a direct consequence of the conspiracy theory mentality. And we are not smart enough to draw the correlation. "We are the center of the world and every one out there is trying to get us" through polio vaccines, in this case.

people who harp about india's sanitation ,pls note.we are 1.2 billion people.still we eradicated this dreaded disease . We are in the process of 100%sanitation to every one by 2020.

Most of them believe that Polio Vaccination is against Islam, when it is so, how Pakistani's can allow ? even if majority of them start limping in the years to come, no problem, Going against Islam no way , that simple.

I am so moved by the picture of the little girl. Because of somebody's ineptness she will have to suffer for her entire life. This single picture depicts the travesty of common people. Every thing cannot be left in the hands of the government and this is true even for my country India. People will have to come forward and fight this disease. Educate people to take their children to vaccination centre. Why wait for health workers to visit your homes???

What a shame. How will we live with the fact that we are responsible for making our next generation disabled. I always thought that on an average Pakistani people are fairly intelligent, but I fail to understand why are we so ineffective in handling any disaster, calamty , or anything that is wrong. What is actually wrong with us...or perhaps we think that nothing wrong with us...it is all fault of someone else...

Govt. is not paying much attention to counter Polio. Polio Teams are also involve in corruption, even the vaccination used is not effective due to mishandling and corruption (i.e. amount utilize by the polio worker for personal benefit rather buying ICE to prevent polio vaccination) .

Can Army play some role here?

What a shame? They are more interested in fighting India than looking after their own children.India has totally eradicated Polio but Pakistan still grappling with it along with terrorism which they nursed and brought up.What is the future for this country.

The polio work should necessarily be given to army/rangers and made mandatory through a law as many Pakistanis refuse to administer it to their children due fear of Taliban or other superstitions.

Total failure of govt. The basic reason behind the problem is the misconception that polio vaccines causes infertility. I have not seen ANY role by media and by the govt in having discussions and campaigns against this misconception. Just recently a very little effort is shown in media where some religious scholars are saying something for the cause. But that is TOO little and unimpressive. I am sure ee can educate the masses easily if the govt has the will. And when people gets awared about the realoty, they will start running themselves gor the vaccine. No parent can knowingly opts for something do bad for their kids. Even animals does not do it. It is the failure of yhe govt and the media of not educating the reality to the masses.

The little girl looks so confident. Its a shame GOVTs in Pakistan (South Asia in general) are so so ineffective and slow. So slow that it takes life out of their own citizen. Are top politicians in Pakistan are waiting for polio to hit closer to their family before they start acting? Until Pakistan isn't free of polio, India will never be out of its fear. There are enough people traveling both sides of the border and enough corruption (forged certificates etc) that polio may visit India again if our neighbor continues with the same apathy.

Certain things to learn from India.. Polio vaccinations are a must and every door in knocked to ensure children are given drops by the health officials. But how do we ensure this in our corrupt country and infested with sick brains who do not believe in this!

Unless you modernize Madrassas these kind of problems won't go away. Parents who cannot afford / provide a healthy, decent life to their children have no right to have have babies, that includes both Pakistani and Indian.

Before people complain about polio from Pakistan, they should realize Pakistan itself victim of polio. Other countries complain about 1-2 polio cases. Pakistan has 200 polio cases. With almost one case reported per day. Polio has no religion or nationality and any one could get polio. It is wrong to blame a single country for polio. It is the failure of the entire world that polio is still lurking in Pakistan. Just condemning polio won't work: root cause of Pakistani polio, like poverty, illiteracy and unsolved issues like Kashmir should be addressed and solved. More people to people contact, relaxing travel restrictions and aid are the best ways to combat polio. India and Pakistan have fought 4 wars over Kashmir and over 1 billion people live on less than $2 per day in the subcontinent. Our Lahore correspondent contributed to this report.
