ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday restored the membership of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's Ashraf Warraich as a member of the Punjab Assembly.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Saqib Nisar, heard Warraich's petition pertaining to his suspension by an election tribunal due to allegations of rigging in the 2013 election.

Warraich was elected as a member of the provincial assembly from PP-97 Gujranwala on a PML-N ticket.

Earlier in August, an election tribunal had declared null and void the election of Warraich and had ordered a re-election in 33 polling stations of PP-97 constituency in Gujranwala.

The tribunal had also directed the ECP to hold re-elections on 33 polling stations as petitioned by Nasir Cheema who had contested elections against Warraich on a ticket of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) in the May 2013 elections.

During the hearing of the petition, Warraich's lawyer told the court that the suspension of his client on account of rigging in 33 polling stations was illegal.

After hearing arguments, the court restored Warraich's membership and subsequently adjourned the hearing of the case to October 15 after issuing notices to all the concerned persons in the petition.
