LAHORE, Sept 14: Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards came down hard on riders involved in racing malpractices to defame the genteel sports and handed down exemplary punishment during the second day/night winter meeting at the Racecourse here on Saturday.

It was a story of poetic justice when riding boy Babar Rehman escaped the stewards wrath in the second race he checked twice his mount Brave Khan to let chestnut filly Shan-e-Nisar win.

However, it was not too late when he was caught for not allowing his mount, King Khan to run on merit in the fourth race. Heavily backed King Khan ran off the frame.

Shortly afterwards, the stewards announced the verdict of an inquiry which found jockey Aamir Pervez guilty of pulling his mount Mun Ki Malka on Aug 16.

The inquiry was instituted after the doubtful running of the filly who subsequently won two races in-a-row in much improved timings on each occasion. Aamir was stood down by the stewards for one year.

Meanwhile, an LRC steward and a prominent stud-and-horse-owner Syed Pervez Hussain Shah has earned the distinction of becoming the first Pakistani, whose horse has won a Group One International Race. His four-year-old Ahern (Dutch Art-Petra Nova) won a Group One Race in Macau on May 31 to lend prominence to the Pakistani owner.

Pervez owns a string of well-bred horses in England, Hong Kong besides Pakistan and his horses has won Pakistan Derby twice — Rapid Rock (1979) and Listen To Me (1992) ridden by English jockey Dennis Michael, who specially came from Hong Kong.

Only three favourite horses won in Saturday day/night card of seven races.
