LAHORE: Announcing an ‘all-party conference’ on the Model Town incident on Sunday, Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri has backtracked from his earlier stance of forming a political alliance against the government.

“Forming any alliance or a grand alliance had never been my agenda,” Dr Qadri told the media after meeting leaders of various political and religious parties at PAT headquarters here on Thursday.

PML-Q leaders Chaudhry Shujaat and Pervaiz Elahi, who had signed a 10-point agenda and worked on forming an anti-government alliance for materialising the agenda along with PAT leadership in London on May 31, were also present during the media talk.

Section 4 of the agreement as accessed by Dawn on PAT’s official website after the media talk on Thursday reads: “In these circumstances, there is a dire need that all patriotic political forces and segments agree on a broader revolutionary agenda and wage a joint struggle for establishment of transparent and participatory democracy in Pakistan in the real sense.”

Backtracks on forming anti-govt alliance; calls APC on 29th

Whereas Section 8 of the agreement highlights the unanimity of views between both the sides on reaching out to other political forces to seek support for the cause. It says: “Demonstrating their complete consensus on the above-mentioned executive and administrative devolution plan and 10-point revolutionary, people’s agenda, Pakistan Muslim League and Pakistan Awami Tehreek have agreed to reach out to and enlist the support of patriotic political forces and segments and launch a countrywide revolutionary movement.”

Dr Qadri termed the alliance reports mere media speculations as discussions on the issue never took place at any point.

“Toppling the government has not been my agenda,” he stressed, adding that the struggle would continue until an end to the ‘system of cruelty’.

The PAT chief said that after consulting various leaders, he had called an APC on June 29 on a single agenda of Model Town tragedy when the unarmed citizens were murdered during the police raid. He said he would never retract from the agenda of eliminating the existing system, and said that a ‘peaceful fight’ would be fought for establishing a new system.

Mr Elahi indirectly denied Qadri’s claim by saying that the discussion on 10-point agenda had been postponed for the time being. Only the APC, he said, was discussed in today’s (Thursday’s) meeting.

Sunni Ittehad Council chief Hamid Raza also said only Model Town tragedy was discussed.

Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid had publicly and categorically stated a day ago (on Wednesday) after a meeting with Qadri here that a grand alliance would be formed within four to six weeks.

Democracy, even in its worst form, is better than Army coup to which Qadri an Queue League are leading. Pakistani people are no fools. They can see that Mr. Qadri lives in Canada, travels in first class and demands highest security and comfort for him, leaving his followers in the lurch. Pakistanis also remember that the Chaudhris of Gujrat had many opportunities to bring out a revolution or at least do something good for the people when they were in power, not too long ago. I think we should give the present government a chance . Their performance so far has been fair. Pakistanis know that the present rulers are no angels from heaven and expect no miracles. But things are relatively better than last year. Give them a chance to work.

Shaikh Rashid had publicly and categorically declared he would resign from his MNA seat if dollar ever touched 98 rupees. It happened and we see Shaikh did not give up his perks as MNA, although he is hardly ever heard inside the Assembly. A grand alliance backed by the dreaded Establishment is also his dream, a short cut to power. I recommend to Mr. Qadri to please make Shaikh Sahib his Deputy when he himself is declared the 'Chief Executive' by the Establishment. Long live Pakistan and Canada!

Our politician being corrupt and pathetic liars are not going to bring any positive change in Pakistan. Pakistan will evolve only under economic and social pressure of marginalized middle and lower-middle class. God save us from our politicians.

This man Qadri is nothing short of being a fake person. He enjoys a peaceful life in Toronto, Canada, savours media attention and whenever he has an itch, he creates trouble for everyone, specially his followers. Innocent lives are either lost and/or injured and then he arrives in Pakistan blowing his trumpet of ridding the current corrupt system and politician and openly talks about revolution. Is he a person to be taken seriously? The Chaudharys of Gujrat are only towing his line because they are arch rivals of the Sharifs and would bend backward to throw spanner in the works for the PML-N. It is high time the people of Pakistan reject Qadri and send him back to Canada.

@Abdul Malik I agree with Abdul Malik. Chaudharies need Qadri as they do not have any public support. Qadri is a failed politician. He is an acknowledged scholar and he should focus on his strength i.e., write books and make speeches.

Pragmatic and fair analysis. In my view, some of these parties are going hoarse as they fear that once the projects conceived and begun by this government begin producing results, this motley crowd will not get a chance to rule for atleast another five years. The incumbents are hardly the most desirable but ,under the present circumstances, no other government has worked so hard and without wasting time made good efforts to control the uncontrolable circumstances they inherited.

Let us not confuse the issue at this early stage. Dr. Qadri's response to the formation of alliance or grand alliance is speculative. We must Wait for the final call for the revolution, which will topple the government automatically if the movement succeeds. A revolt without toppling and removing the present incumbents in the power would be meaningless. Let's not read too much into his conduct. The stage is not ripe for grand alliance formation.

Imran Khan has declared his intention to stay away from Qadri. He wants to have a solo flight. He thinks he will loose his grip over the future of his career. He wants to be perceived as the next Prime Minister of Pakistan. I think he is committing a big blunder by not joining with PAT.No one can bring change alone. They will have to unite against the rulers. They must have one point common agenda. Chaudhrys are in a position to enforce the agenda. The movement for transparent, representative and participatory democracy needs participation of all parties to achieve success.

It has been a myth created by this british MP that bad democrcy is better than the best & the most benevolent & just military rule...

The truth is that in real terms---the best military rule is maybe like a flu for the politicians---you have some bad days and then you get over it---but Bad Democrcy is like a Cancer. It slowly and gradually eats up the morals of the society---it ruins and destroys the character of the society---. It devouvers the body.

Pakistani people have been made fool into believing this by the enemies of pakistan & the pakistanis have fallen for it hook nail & sinker.

When it comes to your own body---you go and get bad cancerous part removed right away or get it fixed---but when it comes to the nation---you re totally lost.

@Javaid Bashir Imran Khan stayed away because his tsunami reality did not materialized but people and his opposition made so much of its fun that Khan Sahib has erased this word from his dictionary. Khan Sahib know that Mr. Qadri,s inqlab will never become a reality and riding on this band wagon of failed politicians will just expedite his party,s demise further down the hill. Mr. Khan,s party is facing internal frictions and their government in KPK is marred with corruption and bad governance. Also his opposition on military action against Talibans and his alliance with Jamat Islami put a question mark on his loyalty with the country and its people. In all these circumstances, Mr. Khan and his party will not commit suicide by joining in hands with Mr. Qadri.

This is not the first and the last U turn he is going to make. He is good at making speeches with no substance, no practical plan and the experience. He has tried the same thing under PPP government by marching to Islamabad and did not accomplish anything. Then he suddenly decided to go back to Canada, leaving his supporters stranded in the capital. You can't bring a revolution from the Business class seat in the plane and his concern about personal security..He has been living in Canada in a cool weather, I think the sweltering heat in Lahore, the humidity and the load shedding will do wonders to his nervous system. The government does not have to do anything, wait three to four weeks and he will disappear again. If he does not leave, he is at a high risk of heat stroke.

Qadri is fake to the core. he changes stances with every change of cap. He wants all the opposition leaders to unite with him on a single point agenda. That is, to find ways and means to revenge his so called "Model Town Tragedy". The point to ponder is, he wants a grand alliance against the Government on the killing of his 8 workers, while we have, on average, more than 11 citizen being killed in Karachi every day since ages! Who is going to call a grand alliance against the Government that has repeatedly failed to stop the gravest of all human tragedies in Karachi?

If I have to choose between Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan, Chaudhrys and sheikh Rashid I would go for the lesser evil, Imran Khan needs to change his dictatorial style and listen to the sane voices. He must revisit his stance and support for the Talibans . Sheikh Rashid does not lie He is a straight forward man. He admits his faults He definitely is a better person than Sharif brothers.
